Indeed, computers can already do some things on their own, like word processing and arithmetic. Though these are basic, they can't produce any truly unique applications without human assistance.

For example, you might tell the computer to add two numbers together. Programming would allow you to tell the computer exactly how these two numbers were added together so that when you perform this same calculation in a different environment, the program does not need any changes.
